Amid the Mud-Slinging, VP Pence Remains Strategically Above the Fray

Vice President Mike Pence may be an ordinary conservative politician in many regards, but within the context of the Trump administration, he is extraordinary. For one thing, he appears to be President Trump’s polar opposite in some respects. Pence’s rhetorical style is measured, calming and does not alarm those on the left who- in the absence of a vice president of their own party can at least rest in their familiarity with the idea of a politician like Pence.

In the mind of a left-leaning liberal, Pence is like the evil that you know. Unlike Trump, they understand his stances- more or less, even if they don’t know his policies- and they are set at ease by his somewhat predictable manner of speech.

President Trump’s selection of Pence for his platform has been shocking to people on both sides of the political divide. To many Trump supporters, Pence’s presence brings worry that the establishment has a seat at the table. To Trump critics, it has, (or should), bring the stark realization that even if they manage to depose Trump- what awaits them is a President who would be more conservative than George Washington.

But Pence’s performance over the past five or six months has revealed not only that he is ideal for this administration- but that President Trump’s selection for VP was informed by his supreme talent and experience working in high powered positions of management.

President Trump is a master of both public relations and the art of making command decisions. He understands that the job of a Vice President is to handle certain tasks that the President himself may be too heavily under fire to attend to. Like in a military command, the job of the Executive Officer, (XO) is to stand between the troops and the Commanding Officer, (CO). The XO’s job is to take some of the heat that the CO cannot afford to take- and to be exposed to certain risks that the CO must be protected from. In this current political climate, that paradigm is turned on its head somewhat- but the basic dynamic still holds true.

While Donald Trump takes the brunt of the fire from critics and the media and handles front page topics like immigration, jobs, and healthcare- Mike Pence has been steadily and reliably spreading the Make America Great Again gospel with conservative, Christian audiences who believe in America and want to stop it being sold off to foreign interests under the guise of tolerance and diversity.

President Trump has the job of saying what the administration is doing directly to the nation, and to take the mud-slinging from the media and from the opposition, while VP Pence is rallying the troops and building support among the audiences that are ready to sign on, if they are not on board already.

It’s a serendipitous symbiosis that could not have been better planned by anyone other than the master deal maker himself. That became abundantly clear when the left started talking about using the 25th Amendment to try and take Trump down. First of all, the Democrats behind this idea do not understand the 25th Amendment- so it’s nothing to be worried about. But what was interesting is that they actually appealed directly to Vice President Pence. They assumed that he would be interested in betraying Trump. They assumed wrong. Mike Pence has made it abundantly clear that he is loyal to President Trump, and that his principles- not power- are his top priority.

While the left rubbed its hands together like a stereotypical villain- plotting to use Pence’s ambition against Trump- they failed to account for the fact that his virtues are real and not just talking points. This is what happens when vipers encounter the virtuous.

All this time, Mike Pence has managed to stay above the fray. He’s been able to do this because of the solid nature of his character- and because the left had long assumed that he could be exploited. But rather than take the bait, Pence has gone on building and energizing Trump’s support base. He has shown the enemies of freedom that he is doing what he is doing not because he is biding his time- waiting for an opportunity to strike- but because he really believes what he says he believes.

If Trump’s tone deaf opponents knew how to absorb new information and depart from their narrative, they would admire Trump’s keen ability to pick good people- and they would see Pence’s conviction as a strength, rather than as a weakness.
