Canada Wants Tougher U.S. Immigration?! Gimme a Break

You may not have seen it, but over the last year or so, Canada has really struggled with illegal immigration. It sounds like something of a bar joke, but the same Canadians who have been heralded as a shining example of tolerance and acceptance are really sick of taking care of illegals.

It’s good for more than a few chuckles for the rest of us, but it is an actual problem, and it gives us a chance to show the progressives why all of their ideas are bad. So, let’s look at Canadian immigration and enjoy a few chuckles when we review their plan of action.

Canada’s Change of Heart

This story actually begins right after Trump was elected. Fearing he would crack down on illegal immigration (which he did), a bunch of migrants fled to Canada. Starting last year, Canada has seen its largest influx of illegal immigration in the nation’s history.

While the nation has traditionally voiced a tendency toward open borders, the influx of illegals was not met warmly. Canadians were so upset with the problem that Justin Trudeau’s approval rating hit an all-time low. Traditionally progressive Canada started to sound very Trumpian in their immigration ideals as early as last summer.

The funniest part of seeing Canada swiftly abandon decades of nose-thumbing progressivism is the scope of the problem. At its worst, illegal immigration into Canada has been less than one-fifth of what we typically see in the U.S. They’ve criticized us for years, but they literally couldn’t handle a fraction of what we face every day.

The New Request

This brings us to the latest development. Canada has officially requested that the U.S. restrict certain visas. The particulars of the request are a little convoluted, so we’ll break it down. Canada doesn’t like Nigerians. Seriously. And they call us the xenophobes!

Here’s how it works. The U.S. has reduced the availability of temporary visas across the board. It’s been a big part of Trump’s overarching immigration reform. Because of this, a lot of people who came into the U.S. on tourist visas aren’t able to stay as long as they would like. The most common solution is to simply jaunt over to Canada as the visa is expiring. They can then request asylum to try and stay in North America. Keep in mind, this is done by people from many backgrounds and for many reasons.

Right now, Canada’s only complaint is when Nigerians do this. They are so frustrated that they have asked the U.S. to expand their vetting process when Nigerians apply for tourist visas. They want us to deny a visa to anyone who admits having travel plans that would take them into Canada.

There’s so much wrong with this. For starters, the motivation is in fact xenophobic (or racist if you prefer). Nigerian asylum seekers seem not to mesh well with Canadian society, and they tend to be more difficult to deal with for the Canadian system. The other ridiculous part of this approach is the lack of autonomy. Canada could simply reform their immigration laws to solve the problem.

A Clogged System

You see, the Canadians aren’t ready to shed their friendly image just yet. Their major complaint is that their immigration system is clogged. By Canadian law, anyone who makes it onto their soil and requests asylum has to be given a hearing. When this happens hundreds of thousands of times in a year, it strains resources.

Until a hearing is granted, the asylum seekers are fed, clothed, sheltered, etc. Naturally, they would rather ask Uncle Sam to fix the issue instead of removing a single clause from their own legislation. If they stopped granting hearings to every single individual, the problem would be resolved in no time. It’s not like they’re facing American levels of illegal immigration. But, that is probably expecting too much logic from such a liberal state.

This can’t be understated. Canada went full progressive on immigration and it is failing them miserably. They literally can’t afford to take care of all of the immigrants, even though the number is relatively small. In their panic, they have singled out Nigerians as the problem and called on Trumpian immigration policy to fix the issue. A room full of screen writers couldn’t have envisioned a sweeter irony.
