Class Action Lawsuit Exposes Hypocrisy from the DNC

The Democratic Party has long been heralded as the worker’s party. For many decades they have pushed for “fair” labor protection laws that were supposed to elevate unorganized or entry-level workers. Many of these policies have had obvious flaws and failures, but today we’re going to look at something different. We’re going to see a grotesque example of the party violating their own laws and practicing intense hypocrisy in regards to how they treat their own campaign labor.

The Facade

While the demands of the left aren’t new, it’s important to review the issue. The first marches for a $15 minimum wages began years ago, and the massive losses in last year’s elections only seem a temporary setback. The renewed surge has many hoping to see a federal mandate follow the footsteps of California and New York. We’ll save the vast reasons this is a bad idea for another day, but suffice it to say that the bulk of the Democratic Party is on board for a significant minimum wage hike, and it seems to be one of the few unifying platforms the party has these days.

The minimum wage push is bolstered by a slew of regulatory change that they want to see in regards to overtime and other “worker rights.” Under Obama, the left successfully saw a big overtime change that lowered the threshold for salary pay to $47,000 annually. To simplify, anyone who earns less than that threshold number is entitled to overtime regardless of what their previous contracts stated.

The Leaders

The high points of leftist hypocrisy are all the more obvious when we consider the major proponents behind the push for progressive wage laws. The names Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren won’t surprise anyone, but even more moderate liberals have backed the platform. Leadership within the DNC, including Tom Perez and Charles Schumer. For those who have trouble keeping up with the rapid changes, Tom Perez is the current DNC chair and Charles Schumer is the Democratic Senate Leader.

The Hypocrisy

Now that we’ve taken a minute to look at the left’s side of things, it’s time to drop the bombs. In classic fashion, the DNC is now under fire because several hundred of their own campaign workers have joined in a class-action lawsuit against them. The suit is being filed because the workers were paid less than minimum wage and were denied overtime compensation. In many cases, workers were putting in 80 to 90 hour weeks and receiving less than $5 per hour compensation.

The majority of contracts in question paid a salary of $3,000 a month. For those keeping score, that is way below the $47,000 threshold that was pushed through by the Democrats. You might be tempted to call this situation ironic. It isn’t. It is pure, intentional hypocrisy, and it runs deeper than simply shorting wages.

During the same span considered by the lawsuit, the DNC paid over $1 million dollars in bonuses to select members. Some of those bonuses exceeded $300,000 per person. It still gets worse. The primary defense posed by the DNC in regards to this case is that they lacked sufficient funds to pay their workers. The very core of the group attacking the greed of “corporate fat cats” was caught red-handed behaving in the exact manner they claim to oppose.

The leadership guilty of these labor infractions are among the current heads of the party today. Both Perez and Schumer were heavily involved with the campaign efforts that underpaid workers, and by some reports, Perez was among those who received a bonus.

Further Reflection

The Democrats love to paint themselves as the friend of the little guy. They fight for fairness and equality. Their commitment to spouting this friendly rhetoric is borderline impressive, but as soon as you have a chance to review their actions, the truth quickly comes to bear. Considering the depth of support the left enjoys from most mainstream media, it isn’t surprising that so many Americans are duped by this facade.

The real problem is that the Democratic Party is founded on flawed and unsustainable principles. If they applied the lessons they have learned from their own budgeting to their general economic platforms, America would have little to worry about. Their inability to do so is some perverse combination of willful deceit and general incompetence.

Thankfully, Trump’s election showed the world that the truth finds a way out no matter how hard they struggle. Eventually, enough Americans will see this hypocrisy and the Democrats will face the choice of major reform or extinction.
