Liberals prefer to bill themselves as the party that has the best interests of minorities at-heart. However, according to former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, liberals’ attempts to erode away the Second Amendment present a real danger to minorities everywhere.
Appearing on The View Condoleezza Rice stunned her largely-liberal hosts by providing a solid defense of the Second Amendment based on its ability to protect minority Americans.
“Let me tell you why I’m a defender of the Second Amendment,” Condoleezza Rice said, “I was a little girl growing up in Birmingham, Alabama, in the late fifties, early sixties. There was no way that Bull Connor and the Birmingham Police were going to protect you. And so when White Knight Riders would come through our neighborhood, my father and his friends would take their guns and they’d go to the head of the neighborhood, it’s a little cul-de-sac and they would fire in the air, if anybody came through. I don’t think they actually ever hit anybody. But they protected the neighborhood. And I’m sure if Bull Connor had known where those guns were he would have rounded them up. And so, I don’t favor some things like gun registration.”
Of course, we thankfully live in a different world than the one that Condoleezza Rice grew up in, but that doesn’t change the fact that the Second Amendment still enables America’s most vulnerable citizens to defend themselves and their families.
As for liberals and their supposed mission of protecting minorities in America, consider the fact that crime-ridden inner-cities are largely populated by minorities. Gun control legislation would do nothing to keep guns out of the hands of the violent gangs in these areas, as they would almost certainly still be able to access firearms on the black market.
What it would do, though, is keep firearms out of the hands of innocent citizens who live in those areas, leaving them defenseless. If liberals really do want to protect minorities, taking away their means of self-defense is not the way to go about it.
These were all points that the hosts of The View were not prepared to argue against. When Condoleezza Rice explained why she was not in favor of increased gun control – specifically a gun registrations system that would enable the government to round up weapons from vulnerable citizens like her father – the hosts of The View quickly deflected the topic to what the appropriate age limit to purchase a firearm should be.
Their obvious deflection notwithstanding, Condoleezza Rice’s point was still brilliantly made, and viewers across America were presented with a different argument about gun control than the ones they are so used to hearing.
Liberals like to paint gun owners as being almost exclusively white, rural traditionalists who value their firearms more than they do the lives of gun victims. This, however, is far from reality. The truth is that gun ownership in America spans all races and backgrounds. When liberals attack Second Amendment rights, they’re not just attacking white conservatives; they’re directly attacking the self-defense capabilities of the minorities they pretend to represent as well.
This argument against gun control is not one that gets a lot of attention, however, it is a very salient point that supporters of the Second Amendment would do well to put a little more emphasis on. David Kopel and Joseph Greenlee once wrote in The Hill that “Guns have historically protected Americans from white supremacists, just as gun control has historically protected white supremacists from the Americans they terrorize.”
Of course, for supporters of gun control, none of these facts are likely to matter. The identity politics so favored by the left has never been about protecting minorities and has always been about winning minority votes. Democrats in power are unlikely to give up their gun control agenda for the sake of protecting anyone, minorities included.
Perhaps, though, if arguments like the one made by Condoleezza Rice are heard by more Americans, liberal minority voters will come to realize that the Democratic party does not truly have their best interests at heart.
