Maxine Waters, U.S. Representative for California’s 43rd Congressional District is not only encouraging her constituents to harass any Trump supporter they come across – she doesn’t seem to mind if her own party implodes in the process.
Waters has gone from her 15 minutes of fame as her party’s designated crackpot to become the darling of young socialist minded Democrats and a near-constant fixture on MSNBC and CNN.
The 79 year old firebrand dominated the headlines a month ago when she encouraged her supporters to actively protest President Trump’s Cabinet members wherever they might happen to encounter them.
Last week Waters encouraged her supporters to “turn on” and “absolutely harass” White House officials at gas stations, restaurants, etc. and that’s exactly what one restaurant owner did in Lexington, Virginia. White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders entered Red Hen restaurant for a meal and was soon asked to leave. Based on Waters’s speech, she wants to see more of these distasteful scenes.
Sensing the damage she was doing to her party, both Church Schumer and Nancy Pelosi distanced themselves from Water’s comments. Pelosi, the House Minority Leader implored for conduct in a way that “achieves unity.”
When Pelosi and Schumer mildly rebuked Waters, she let it be known she isn’t about to be reigned in by party leaders who care more about their position than supporting her.
“I strongly disagree with those who advocate harassing folks if they don’t agree with you,” said Schumer last week, “that’s not right and that’s not American.”
Waters defended her comments on Joy Reid’s MSNBC show, saying that Trump “does not deserve” to be president of the United States. She said she was “simply standing up to him.” The Congresswoman told Reid that Democrats missed the point and were only looking out for their own jobs.
When asked if she was surprised by Schumer and Pelosi denouncing her rhetoric as “un-American,” she said, “You know, I was surprised at Chuck Schumer. I’ve not quite seen that done before, but one of the things I recognize, being an elected official, is in the final analysis, you know, leadership like Chuck Schumer’s will do anything that they think is necessary to protect their leadership.”
Other black female leaders expressed their “deep disappointment“ with House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer for their “recent failure to protect“ Waters “from unwarranted attacks from the Trump administration and others in the GOP.“
In a letter to Schumer they wrote:
“We write to share our profound indignation and deep disappointment over your recent failure to protect Congresswoman Waters from unwarranted attacks from the Trump Administration and others in the GOP. That failure was further compounded by your decision to unfairly deride her as being ‘uncivil’ and ‘un-American.’”
“In doing so, we believe this mischaracterizes her call to action for peaceful democratic assembly and the exercise of her constitutional rights to free speech in support of defenseless immigrant children and their families.”
As much trouble as she fermented, Republicans are probably secretly glad that Waters doesn’t think before she speaks. No matter how disingenuous her talking points may be, Waters is right about one thing – Schumer and Pelosi responded to her comments because they threaten their position of power. They don’t disagree with her, but know that what she has been saying is political poison.
Maxine Waters is telling the truth about her own party. When put in put in front of a camera, she’ll say all the things they want to hear but would never admit – their strategies and their desire to see Trump fail.
The Democratic leadership had already shown its willingness to spurn a potential Supreme Court candidate simply based on her religion.
Waters has no problem proudly declaring, “God is on OUR side! On the side of the children. On the side of what’s right. On the side of what’s honorable.” She also has no problem saying that Jeff Sessions, a devout Christian, has no idea what the Bible says.
Pelosi and Schumer are clinging to power in a party whose leadership is aging and out of touch. It is Waters who boldly screams to her follower: “And so, let’s stay the course. Let’s make sure we show up wherever we have to show up … you get out and you create a crowd and you push back on them.”
When it comes to Democratic leadership, Maxine Waters shows where the party is headed.
