Is A Second Civil War about to Start? Carl Bernstein Thinks So

In 1972, a young reporter for The Washington Post named Carl Bernstein teamed up with Bob Woodward and conducted much of the original investigation involving Richard Nixon during the Watergate scandal. It was an investigation which led to an impeachment hearing over which president Nixon resigned. As we have previously reported, President Nixon’s presidency had a great deal in common with the Trump presidency- insofar as the media has been desperate to undermine Trump and report negatively on anything and everything they can even remotely grasp onto.

The Nixon administration was swollen with accomplishments which today, would place the man squarely in the DNC Hall of Fame. Richard Nixon had many foreign and domestic policy achievements that would make an impressive resume for any president- and the scandal that brought him down would pale in comparison to the policy failures of our previous three presidents.

Carl Bernstein takes a great deal of the credit for the final blow that ended the Nixon presidency and obscured much of the great work that Nixon did for our country. Today, Bernstein is a very active pundit, working to defame President Trump, seemingly trying to capitalize on the fame derived from his work concerning Watergate.

Bernstein has been one of the most vocal among the crowd of people clamoring to exploit the Democrat’s idea that Trump may be removed using the provisions of the 25th Amendment. It’s a misguided clarion call based on a gross misinterpretation of the 25th Amendment which has done little for the Democrats except give them something to talk about on television.

But Bernstein may have a good point on a tangentially related topic—the culture war. He says that fact based news is becoming impossible and that a “cold civil war” is inevitable. It’s incongruous that he would say this from his favorite platform, the now failing news network, CNN.

Bernstein says, “The difference between Watergate and today is we are in the middle of a cold civil war. A cultural and political civil war and our reporting is taking place within it. Nothing like it existed during Watergate.”

“Part of this cold civil war itself is media being perceived by different viewers as standing for different versions of the truth.”

“Cable news is a different form to what we had during Watergate. We go farther now, viewers are getting more heavily interpreted information.”

“The media has become a hot house of political debate where a fact-based argument is impossible. We’re just lobbing accusations back and forth.”

Bernstein is right, and it’s ironic that he would say so on the one network that is most responsible for sinking the once stolid reputation of the major news media outlets. For one thing, we are in a culture war. It is a war that has been going on since at least the late 18th century, and it is a war between international interests seeking to eliminate the freedoms and property rights of a sovereign nation and the people of that nation. It is a war between those who love liberty and those who crave power.

Over the past 18 months or so, CNN and other legacy media networks have taken the side of those who would like to see the ability of the middle class to make honest livings destroyed. This is why they oppose Donald Trump so vociferously. But the mainstream media has not created the cold civil war that Bernstein talks about. It’s the people who are fighting it who have created it and the reason it is still a “cold” war is because those fighting for freedom of speech have kept it from going hot.

This is what Democrats and pundits like Bernstein refuse to understand. It is freedom of speech that keeps arguments from turning violent, it is the strident respect for the right of our fellow human beings to speak their beliefs and convictions that is preventing this culture war from turning into a hot war.

It is the left who is trying to turn the temperature up on this culture war by assaulting attendees of conservative speakers at colleges, by starting riots, by calling for assassinations, by giving law enforcement organizations orders to stand down while leftist agitators block roads, destroy property and assault conservatives.

Carl Bernstein is right. We are in the middle of a cold civil war, and if those who insist that the idea of making America great again is somehow racist are not beaten verbally and at the voting booth, they will happily and rapidly escalate this cold culture war into a second hot civil war.
