Is Opposition Among Rank and File Republicans Helping or Hurting Trump?

Donald Trump has been a whirlwind that wound his way through the Republican primaries and, to the amazement of Republican leaders, became the last man standing from the original field of 17 Presidential candidates.

Many believed he was running as a bit of a joke. Many more hoped that was the case and he would soon tire of the campaign trail and return to his real estate and business empire.

Now that Mr. Trump has won more electorates that he needed to clinch the nomination for President, some party elite are refusing or struggling to endorse Mr. Trump in his bid for presidency. But, is that hurting or helping Mr. Trumps efforts for election?

The Fire Fueling Trump’s Success

There is a lot of anger within the Republican Party directed at a leadership that many feel is ignoring them. Most voters are not far right-wing, but somewhere in the middle. For decades Republican voters have been begging for a more reasonable voice within the party.

For the most part, these voters, who want to have someone listen to them, have been ignored, overlooked, and even told to shut up because the party leadership knows what best – even as Obama was elected to a second term that by all rights should never have happened.

Then Mr. Trump comes along and he’s listening. Really listening to what the Republican voters are asking for. He understands the wish lists of problems to be solved, the fears and concerns, and he has taken on a more populist approach that appeals to these voters while offering palatable solutions to their concerns.

The people love him because he’s not one of the typical politicians who makes promises and kisses babies from one side of his mouth while obliging the people who put him in power from the other. The Republican voters have become distrustful of the party elite and are in the process of staging a very public transformation within the party with Donald Trump at the helm.

The Party Elite Stage an Exit

Now there is the apparent problem of well-known party hierarchy including two past presidents and one former presidential candidate refusing to endorse Mr. Trump despite the voters’ clear preference for him.

Since this is the same thinking that has so many Republican voters choosing Trump as their candidate of choice, there is the distinct possibility that they are making these choices at their own peril rather than Mr. Trump’s.

In fact, there is a great deal of thought among Pundits, that this is the biggest favor the party elites could have given Donald Trump in his bid for the Presidency as it further distances him from the very people voters are revolting against.

How Mr. Trump is Defying Odds and Still Winning Voters

The latest polls have Trump passing Hillary Clinton by nearly five points in a two-way race. The momentum, it seems, is all on his side. Mrs. Clinton, though, has a few problems of her own to overcome in her bid for the Presidency.

Clinton’s legal matters– despite her best efforts to ignore the problem are a huge obstacle she must overcome. The case against her is moving forward and is not going to go away on its own. In fact, the roar about indictments against her for using a private email server is getting louder by the day.

Then there is her husband, former President Clinton who is becoming somewhat of an albatross for her claims that she is the obvious champion of women – not to mention the recent scandal of women’s pay in the Clinton Foundation. Her road to the White House is suddenly seeming far less rosy.

Will opposition to Trump among rank and file Republicans help or hurt Mr. Trump? It’s too early to tell definitively, but for now it doesn’t seem to be hurting at all.
