The Louisiana Flooding and a Tale of Two Presidential Candidates

The recent flooding in south Louisiana has offered a study in contrast in how two presidential candidates responded to catastrophe. As the people of south Louisiana and their Cajun Navy rolled up their pants and helped their neighbors without waiting on anything from the federal government, at least one presidential candidate cared.

When it came to disaster, Donald Trump showed up with supplies and support while Hillary Clinton didn’t show up at all.

Flooding began on in the area east of Baton Rouge, the state capital, on August 12 and by August 15, at least ten rivers had reached from moderate to major flood level and eight had reached record levels. In Denham Springs, just east of Baton Rouge, the Amite river crested five feet above its highest recorded level in history.

When the waters began to slowly recede on August 15, the citizens of Livingston Parish alone had lost an estimated 75% of their homes. And how did the President and the two candidates looking to take his place respond?

President Obama continued his vacation at Martha’s Vineyard along with his 247th 18 hole round of golf as president, Hillary Clinton filled the skies with carbon emissions as she zig-zagged across the country raising money for herself, and Donald Trump used his own money to fly to Louisiana.

Though he was criticized by a few, the people of the Pelican State took notice of Trump’s donation of $100,000 and a semi loaded with supplies. Even James Carville and Mary Landrieu, about as die hard Democrats as one can find, had nothing but good things to say about Trump’s visit.

Longtime Clinton supporter and Baton Rouge resident, James Carville expressed his appreciation for Donald Trump for his visit to Louisiana amid the catastrophic flooding. Speaking on Fox and Friends he said, “Donald Trump came — thank you, Donald Trump. He gave $100,000 to a church in Greenwell Springs, it was very effective. Thank you, Donald Trump.”

Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards, a Democrat, who had previously questioned Trump’s visit, reversed himself a couple of days later, telling CNN that he never cast doubt on Trump’s intentions and was thankful for the Republican presidential candidate shining the light on the devastation of the flooding.

When Steve Doocey noted that President George W. Bush “was just lambasted by the press, including by Barack Obama, for not showing up” in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, Carville defensively replied, “I think the problem was the FEMA response during Katrina was less than stellar.”

Trump visited the flood stricken area within days. Contrary to those who claimed it was just for a photo op that would tie up local security, he arrived in his own plane with his own private security detail and asked for no state police or local law enforcement detail. He also brought with him a semi loaded with supplies that he helped unload for about an hour.

In the meantime, as the residents of south Louisiana dealt with the worst disaster since Hurricane Sandy, Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton traversed across the country hobnobbing with the rich and famous and building up her campaign war chest even further.

In the days after the flooding, Clinton spent her time hawking votes and dollars. She was busy everywhere except for Louisiana, though she flew from a fundraiser with Cher in Massachusetts to Los Angeles so she could appear on Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night talk show.

Clinton’s schedule as the flooding disaster unfolded went like this:

August 16: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – spoke at a voter registration event.

August 17: Cleveland, Ohio – spoke at a voter registration event.

August 18: New York – held a roundtable discussion with law enforcement officials.

August 19: Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts – celebrated Bill’s 70th birthday

August 20: Nantucket,Massachusetts – appeared at a $100,000-per-couple fundraiser with the Rothschild’s.

August 21: Provincetown, Massachusetts – Spoke at a fundraiser with Cher.

August 22: Los Angeles, CA – appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live, her first public appearance since Ohio on August 17. Attended a fundraiser held by and Denzel Washington. Attended another $100,00 per couple fundraiser held by Disney CEO Bob Iger.

August 23: Los Angeles, CA – attended a fundraiser at the home of Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake.

It may be a cliche, but the picture of two very different candidates during the personal suffering of average folks is worth a thousand campaign platitudes.
