The Seth Rich Murder: A Suspicious Death or Fake News?

In July of 2016, Seth Rich, a staffer for the DNC was killed by gunshot near his home in Washington DC. Just 27 years old, Rich was hired by the DNC to work on a computer program meant to help voters to cast their votes remotely. Police who came on the scene found Rich lying in the street at 4:00 am.

Despite the fact that the incident was reported as a robbery, none of Rich’s personal possessions were taken. He still had his wallet, money, credit cards, an expensive necklace, and mobile phone on his person after the unknown attackers fled. He was pronounced dead at 5:57 am at a local hospital.

Multiple groups and individuals have offered substantial rewards for anyone with information on the attackers, including WikiLeaks, but no one has come forward. The reward offerings total $170,000.

Rich’s mother noted that her son had bruises on his face hands and knees in addition to the two gunshot wounds in his back. These are the telltale signs that a person had been in a fight prior to death. This means the attackers would have had ample time to steal Rich’s possessions- yet nothing was taken from his person- except his life.

On the 9th of August 2016, a spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police Department released the following statement, “At this time, there is no indication that Seth Rich’s death is connected to his employment at the DNC. However, we welcome information that could potentially lead to the identification of the individual(s) responsible for his death and are pleased when any outside contributors help us to generate new leads.”

Later that month the founder of WikiLeaks, Julian Assange, made the implication that Rich was the source of the now famous DNC leaked documents which are widely held to have been a major deciding factor in the outcome of the presidential election.

Assange said in a televised interview, “Whistleblowers go to significant efforts to get us material and often very significant risks. As a 27-year-old, who works for the DNC was shot in the back, murdered just a few weeks ago for unknown reasons as he was walking down the street in Washington. “

The reporter then asked, “That was just a robbery, I believe. Wasn’t it?”

Assange replied, “No.”

The reporter asked if Rich was one of WikiLeaks’ sources. Assange said that he cannot comment on who their sources of information are.

On May 15, 2017, Rod Wheeler, a private investigator working for the Rich family said, “The police nor the FBI have been very forthcoming. They haven’t been cooperating at all. I believe that the answer to solving his death lies on that computer, which I believe is either as the police department or with the FBI. I have been told both.”

Wheeler’s going public with statements like this after months of working on the case and getting very little help from law enforcement has brought new attention to this case. Wheeler says that he has a source in the Washington police department who told him, “[…] we were told to stand down on this case and I can’t share any information with you.”

When asked if his sources have told him anything to suggest that there is a connection between Rich and WikiLeaks, Wheeler said, “Absolutely. That is confirmed.”

The DNC released a statement in which they commented, “We know of no evidence that supports these allegations. We are continuing to cooperate with investigators and have no further comments.”

Ordinarily, when a murder investigation is underway, investigators will select their suspects on three criteria; motive, means, and opportunity. At present, there are two possible suspects. The first is a random street thug whose intent would have been to steal Seth Rich’s personal belongings. The other is the Democratic National Committee.

A random thief would have had the means, and the opportunity- but in the absence of any actual theft- such a person does not match the crime in terms of motive.

The DNC, on the other hand, would certainly have the means, and the opportunity. But unlike our theoretical street thief, the DNC also had a likely motive. That motive would be to send a warning shot across the bow of anyone else considering leaking sensitive information to WikiLeaks.

The only conclusion is that there are significant leads in this case- leads that are not being followed. And there is no mystery when we logically deduce that the most likely suspects who have motive, means, and opportunity are the people most harmed by the DNC documents released before the election, namely Hillary Rodham Clinton, and John “Skippy” Podesta.
