What Lies Immediately Ahead for President Trump?

Last Friday, Donald Trump becomes the 45th president of the Unites States. The question now is, what are his immediate and long-range goals? What does he have complete control over and what will he have to depend on a Republican majority House and Senate?

Our next President has left little to the imagination when it comes to his immediate plans. Before the election, Trump outlined his plans in his 100-day action plan to Make America Great Again.

In what he termed his Contract with the American Voter, then candidate Trump identified three main areas he intended to focus on once elected. Those include: cleaning up Washington, including by imposing term limits on Congress; protecting American workers; and restoring rule of law.

Some of the things he promises to propose on his first day office include:

  • Constitutional Amendment to impose term limits on all members of Congress.
  • Hiring freeze on all federal employees to reduce federal workforce through attrition (exempting military, public safety, and public health).
  • Requirement that for every new federal regulation, two existing regulations must be eliminated.
  • Five year ban on White House and Congressional officials becoming lobbyists after they leave government service.
  • Lifetime ban on White House officials lobbying on behalf of a foreign government.
  • Complete ban on foreign lobbyists raising money for American elections.
  • His intention to renegotiate NAFTA or withdraw from the deal under Article 2205.
  • Withdrawal from the Trans-Pacific Partnership.
  • Direct his Secretary of the Treasury to label China a currency manipulator.
  • Direct his Secretary of Commerce and U.S. Trade Representative to identify all foreign trading abuses that unfairly impact American workers and direct them to use every tool under American and international law to end those abuses immediately.
  • Lift the restrictions on the production of $50 trillion dollars’ worth of job-producing American energy reserves, including shale, oil, natural gas and clean coal.
  • Lift the Obama-Clinton roadblocks and allow vital energy infrastructure projects, like the Keystone Pipeline, to move forward.
  • Cancel billions in payments to U.N. climate change programs and use the money to fix America’s water and environmental infrastructure.
  • Cancel every unconstitutional executive action, memorandum and order issued by President Obama.
  • Begin the process of selecting a replacement for Justice Scalia from one of the 20 judges on his list, who will uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States.
  • Cancel all federal funding to Sanctuary Cities.
  • Begin removing the more than 2 million criminal illegal immigrants from the country and cancel visas to foreign countries that won’t take them back.
  • Suspend immigration from terror-prone regions where vetting cannot safely occur. All vetting of people coming into our country will be considered extreme vetting.

There is no doubt the opposition will be fierce but Trump can accomplish all of the actions listed above either through rescinding executive actions of President Obama or enacting his own.

It’s no wonder Democrats have pulled out all stops to try and ensure Donald Trump’s presidency is dead on arrival. Many of them have made wild suggestions to disrupt Donald Trump’s first 100 days as president.

Some of the suggestions such as boycott, march, and protest are typical liberal fare. Others should be easy to circumvent since 35 state legislatures are controlled by Republicans—the pushing of progressive causes like environmental reform, progressive taxes, and a higher minimum wage at the state and local level.

More troubling and a reason for the electorate to be vigilant is the lack of enthusiasm for Trump’s agenda among Republican leadership. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell promises that repealing Obamacare is a “pretty high item on our agenda” along with comprehensive tax reform and achieving border security “in whatever way is the most effective.” At the same time, he has refused to discuss the Senate’s immigration agenda further and has flatly refused to consider term limits.

New presidents can and often do take advantage of their power to direct the executive branch. Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama issued memoranda that reversed the previous administration’s rules about international aid abortion funding shortly after taking office. Unilateral action during the first 100 days was on the decline before it climbed back up under Obama.

His supporters are pulling for Trump to break the mold and wipe the slate clean by negating what Obama thought was his sure legacy.
