Approval Rating: Are Liberals Opposed to Trump or His Policies?

There is a lot of talk about Trump’s approval rating. Depending on which headlines you believe, it ranges from the worst in history to so bad it should be criminal. You’re smart enough to see past the sensationalism and understand that the headlines are at minimum hyperbolic exaggeration by liberal run mainstream media outlets.

If you haven’t taken the time to look more deeply, you may be surprised to learn the truth about Trump’s approval. It isn’t nearly as negative as it has been portrayed, but, more importantly, it tells us a lot about the state of conservative and liberal America. Spoiler alert: things do not look good for the left.

Current Rating

Yes, we know that current approval polls are run by the same groups who all predicted Hillary in a landslide. Nevertheless, we can look at these polls to learn a few things. The first thing we can do to avoid repeating polling mistakes is to acknowledge the uncertainty. Right now Trump’s approval rating is accurate to within 12 points. That’s pretty abysmal, but it’s what we have to work with. According to those numbers, Trump has a total approval rating in the 40s and a disapproval rating that is also in the 40s (accounting for margin of error he could actually have a nationally positive rating right now).

What is more telling is some of the polling breakdowns. Current approval trends look very much like the map from the election in November. Excessively liberal California accounts for the bulk of anti-Trump sentiment, but the state is large enough to sway the national average.

Among Republicans, Trump still has an excellent approval rating, and when his voters were polled, over 98 percent approved of the job he has done so far. Now that we know a little more about the state of Trump’s approval ratings, we’re going to talk about the liberals in particular.

Policy vs Person

Trump is clearly a big swing in the opposite direction of Obama, but even with their differences, there are some policy similarities between the two. What we find is that every policy Trump has endorsed has been booed by the left, even when the idea originated with Obama. This is most obvious when we review health care.

While Trump did attack Obamacare with the full force of his office, Congress forced a compromise, and the end result is that Trumpcare is identical to Obamacare with a small reallocation of funding. The few pieces that were headed for bankruptcy were scrapped, but the bulk of the policy is still there. But, now that it has Trump’s name attached to it, the liberals hate it passionately.

This trend continues with respect to a few specific foreign and economic policies. In foreign affairs, Trump has so far stayed pretty close to Obama’s sentiment. He has avoided putting boots on the ground in new conflicts and has continued to fulfill Obama’s commitments to bombing and Special Forces campaigns. In fact, Obama did the legwork for one of Trump’s first raids, and still the liberals condemned him for it. It is painfully clear that the left is more interested in personal attacks and obstructionism than a serious review of Trump policy.

Extremism at its Worst

You would expect this behavior from career politicians, but the real frustration comes from the voting masses. Video after video has emerged of college student liberals being duped into condemning Obama. In these pranks, interviewers falsely attribute Obama policy to Trump and ask the students opinions. In every case, they condemn the policies as being racist, xenophobic, sexist or generically evil. Not once do they actually review the results of the policy or logic tied to it.

This is the crux of the problem with modern liberals. They have entrenched themselves so deeply in demonizing their opposition that they are forced to morally object to every idea, regardless of what aim it serves.

For all the vitriol between the two parties, there is still a lot of common ground that is being completely ignored. Both parties want to reduce poverty, improve health care, secure the nation and expand on the American dream. The disagreement comes from what methods will best accomplish those goals.

It’s a shame that the left no longer cares about constructive criticism. For all of his merits, Trump is still an imperfect human, and a productive attitude from the left could help him better the nation. Instead they will blindly attack all that he does because they have backed themselves into a corner. Thankfully, Trump doesn’t need their approval to make changes that will benefit them in the long run.
