With at least 21 people dead across Texas last week and millions without power, President Biden assured Americans the government “stands ready” to help provide emergency resources. But Biden prefers lip service over action because he almost immediately denied the state’s major disaster relief request, leaving no help for all of the Texans hard hit from the worst winter storm in a century.
Instead, Biden originally approved FEMA resources for only 77 of the state’s 254 counties (31 additional counties were later added). The Biden-approved declaration includes the largest cities in Texas, including Houston, Dallas, Austin, and San Antonio, but leaves out some of the most devastated smaller communities across the Lone Star State.
Texas Governor Abbott graciously accepted the limited disaster assistance in his statement: “I thank President Biden for his assistance as we respond to impacts of winter weather across our state. Texas will continue to work with our federal partners to ensure all eligible Texans have access to the relief they need. The funds provided under the Major Disaster Declaration may provide crucial assistance to Texans as they begin to repair their homes and address property damage.”
Interestingly, 13 Democrat Congressional members supported a statewide FEMA request. Senators John Cornyn and Ted Cruz formally request President Biden’s assistance “for all 254 Texas counties as a result of severe winter weather that began on February 11, 2021. We urge you to grant this request to secure the health and safety of all Texans affected by this disaster.”
In related news, President Biden has said he plans to soon visit impacted areas across Texas. It would be a nice touch, considering he did not even visit the nation’s second most-populated state when he ran for president in 2020.
Of course, he insists he doesn’t want to get in the way. Plus, there is COVID-19. And Mario Cart. Maybe he’ll “circle back” later on the issue.
Then Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez tweeted, “The infrastructure failures in Texas are quite literally what happens when you don’t pursue a Green New Deal.” She later visited Houston to help, but she could do better on the “thoughts and prayers” responses.
Other leftists have enjoyed the Texas winter storms as an opportunity to attack its political views as well. For example, Senator Chuck Schumer tweeted, “We need the federal investigation by @FERC & @NERC_official to look into how Gov. Abbott’s policies in Texas have failed & exacerbated the winter storm crisis.”
Seriously? A winter storm kills people and we need to investigate environmental policies? Maybe some other time.
Texans don’t form a committee when disaster strikes. They put on their boots and get to work.
If Biden and friends won’t help, it won’t stop Texans from making repairs and moving on without federal support. But they won’t forget Democrats blaming their frozen windmills or ignoring their requests for assistance.
Instead, they’ll grow stronger in their support for Texas and American conservative values that help drain the swamp in Washington. Expect Republican support to only increase across Texas, even if Biden imports an entire generation of future voters.
