Surprising no one at all, prominent Democrats are suddenly telegraphing excuses for why Joe Biden should refuse to debate Donald Trump in this year’s presidential election. No that there’s anything wrong with Biden! No sirree! He’s fit as a fiddle! In fact, Biden tied an onion to his belt just the other day, which used to be the style as you know, and walked all the way to Shelbyville and back. Twice!
No, the reason Democrats want to cancel the debates all basically boil down to: Trump is just too awful for a nice man like Joe Biden to dirty himself by debating with him.
We knew these debates were never going to happen. Joe Biden was falling apart a year ago when he was debating other Democrats for the nomination. Some of his primary opponents even mentioned Biden’s sad mental decline at the time.
Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) jabbed at Biden, saying he didn’t think the former vice president had the “stamina” to run a presidential campaign. During another debate, Julian Castro asked Biden point-blank, “Are you forgetting what you said two minutes ago?” Biden had, in fact, forgotten what he had said just two minutes prior. The befuddled Biden started nervously glancing around the stage like he wasn’t even sure where he was. If he had had an escape hatch nearby, Biden likely would have jumped in it.
It was obvious to everyone a year ago that Biden’s mental decline was serious. He’s not the same man who jetted off to China and Ukraine to use the power of his office to secure insanely lucrative, corrupt deals for his ne’er-do-well son, Hunter “Snorty” Biden.
Now Joe Lockhart, the guy who used to be Bill Clinton’s press secretary, has penned an op-ed for CNN’s website calling for the cancellation of any debates with Donald Trump. Again: Not because there’s anything wrong with Joe Biden! Lockhart writes:
“Whatever you [Joe Biden] do, don’t debate Trump.”
Okay, this should be good. Tell us, Lockhart, why Joe Biden shouldn’t debate Trump. Why should the tradition of nationally televised debates which have been in place since the 1960s for the benefit of the voters suddenly be upended in 2020?
Lockhart continues, “Trump has now made more than 20,000 misleading or false statements according to the Washington Post.”
Uh huh. The Washington Post checked, and the burgers were NOT stacked “a mile high” when that football team visited the White House. Such a liar!
“It’s a fool’s errand to enter the ring with someone who can’t follow the rules or the truth. Biden will undoubtedly take heat from Republicans and the media for skipping the debates. But it’s worth the risk as trying to debate someone incapable of telling the truth is an impossible contest to win.”
According to Democrat Party insiders like Lockhart who are suddenly panicking, Joe Biden is just too honest and too nice and decent of a person to sully himself by stooping to Donald Trump’s level and participating in a bourgeoisie debate. Ick! You can’t expect a dignified statesman like Joe Biden to get his hands dirty in such a fashion!
This argument seems odd looking back at the 2016 election. No one was warning Marco Rubio or Ted Cruz or Jeb or Hillary Clinton to not sully themselves by debating Donald Trump. In fact, everyone wanted Donald Trump to get as much debate time as possible, so that the people could see what an awful person he was. The voters would have rejected Trump in 2016, if only his awfulness could have been exposed in the televised debates, was how the arguments went just four years ago.
Plus, there was the fact that the last GOP debate on CNN that Trump participated in drew 16,000,000 viewers, which is slightly larger than their current less-than-100,000 nightly viewers today. Oh, to be a fly on CNN’s wall during the discussions of the Biden-Trump debates. So much money on the table… but they can’t allow Biden to get on stage and start lamenting how the Minneapolis police killed that poor Pink Floyd or Boy George or whatever his name was.
We know the Trump-Biden debates are never going to happen. But it’s going to be hilarious to watch the excuses pile up as Democrats invent new reasons why we should suddenly not have any televised debates for the first time since 1960.
