Osama Bin Laden’s Son Vows to ‘Avenge’ His Father

Hamza bin Laden, the son of the infamous Osama bin Laden has released a message in which he says he has taken up the mantle in the militant group’s fight against the US.

Among four messages that have now been declassified, is a speech entitled ‘We Are All Osama’. US commandos killed Osama bin Laden at his Pakistani hideout in 2011, dealing a major blow to the militant group al-Qaida.

According to CIA intelligence the ranks of al-Qaida fighters in Afghanistan had fallen to less than 100 by 2009. All that remained at that time were marauding bands operating in the valleys and mountains along the Pakistani/Afghan border, the western Sahara, and remote areas of Yemen.

According to the Brookings Institution, Hamza, who is 28 by many estimates, was at his father’s side in Afghanistan before the 9/11 attacks and resided with him in Pakistan after most of al-Qaida’s senior leadership was driven from Afghanistan.

A lead investigator on al-Qaida after the 9/11 attacks said Hamza was first chosen by his father to eventually take control of the terrorist group. He has appeared in a number of propaganda videos and, as the investigator told reporters, is a poster kid for al-Qaida… and for members of al-Qaida, who were indoctrinated with these propaganda videos, he means a lot to them.”

Osama bin Laden’s half-brothers believes Hamza is most likely in Afghanistan where he is supposedly plotting to avenge his father’s killing at the hands of the U.S. special forces.

Many in the intelligence community are taking Hamza bin Laden’s message as a sign that al-Qaida’s aging leadership is looking for a way to reverse its fortunes after years of decline, and the rise of rival organizations like ISIS.

In his 21-minute speech, Hamza bin Laden denies al-Qaida is on the decline and claims the group he now heads has tens of thousands of supporters. He promised to continue the militant group’s fight against the United States and its allies. He said,

“We will continue striking you and targeting you in your country and abroad in response to your oppression of the people of Palestine, Afghanistan, Syria, Iraq, Yemen, Somalia and the rest of the Muslim lands that did not survive your oppression.”

al-Qaida has proven to be resilient since the US invasion of Afghanistan. Just months after George Bush ordered that initial push, Jordanian drop out Abu Musab al-Zarqawi led a small band of foreign fighter modeled on the lines of al-Qaida.

Osama Bin Laden, though isolated and in hiding, endorsed Zarqawi who soon alienated a number in the Arab world proving himself to be a vicious leader. Zarqawi provoked communal strife by ordering suicide bombings that claimed Arab casualties along with the American occupiers.

By the time of his death in June 2006, Zarqawi’s brutality had alienated Sunni Iraqi public opinion prompting a rare apology from Bin Laden.

Since then the terrorist group has floundered, as it awaited a charismatic leader in Osama bin Laden’s mold. His son, Hamza has all the appearance of being that person.

Bruce Riedel of the Brookings Institute said: “Hamza provides a new face for al-Qaida, one that directly connects to the group’s founder. He is an articulate and dangerous enemy.”

Hamza is a younger voice for a group whose aging leaders have struggled to inspire militants around the world that have been galvanized by Isis.

According to the Guardian, Hamza married the daughter of the lead hijacker in the 9/11 terror attacks. The wedding may have served as an indication there was a new first family in charge of al-Qaida.

Martin Chulov of the Guardian told CBS News that the bin Laden family fear Hamza’s wedding to be a sign the group is prepared for a resurgence. “What they would,” said Cholov, “is that 9/11 alumni remains very viable and very real even 17 years after the fact.”

The bin Laden family has been divided for some time with many seeking to distance themselves from the infamy of Osama. Hamza’s uncles told the Guardian they had hoped the family’s association with terrorism might have ended with Osama bin Laden’s death.

The uncles urged Hamza to reconsider his path. “Think twice about what you are doing. Don’t retake the steps of your father. You are entering horrible parts of your soul,” they said.

Now it appears Hasma is set to fill his father’s shoes. For those who say 09/11 is ancient history, think again.
