Realists Solve Problems While Ideologues Spin Their Wheels

At the penalty of evoking the cliché about the glass that’s either half full, or half empty- depending on how you look at it- we took the time to ask a question that too few ask: what about just looking at the contents of the glass straight on and noting exactly how full it is in actuality?

The case is very much the same with the political atmosphere in this country with our so called two party system. On one side, you have the leftists who assume that big daddy government can solve any problem with the right policy and enough taxes. On the other hand, you have conservatives who are adamant that nothing but trouble can come out of any federally mandated program.

Who is right and who is wrong?

Well, the best answer to that question would obviously be that it depends on the situation. To respond in any other way to this question would be to take the rigid and unwavering line of ideologues.

We have a system where it is acceptable to say things like; “I’m pro-choice because I’m a democrat,” or “I believe George W. Bush was this country’s greatest president because I’m a republican.”

Taking a view of an issue based solely on fidelity to a political party is nonsensical. It’s so nonsensical, in fact, that it is the sort of thing that conspiracy theorists would site as evidence that the population is being intentionally dumbed down by a secret elite.

If someone told you that a glass is half full and that they base their appraisal of the glass on an attachment to their relative proximity to the glass, you would abuse that person verbally and disavow any further dealings with them.

Likewise, if someone were to tell you that he is an optimist- you probably wouldn’t have much to say to him. Why would you? Being an optimist is a positive thing, isn’t it? Well, not if you’re trying to get an accurate appraisal of a situation.

If you want to pass a boat under a bridge, you want someone with an accurate measuring device to come along and deliver a qualified answer. You want to know that the height of the boat at tide level is less than the height of the bridge clearance.

What you don’t want is an optimist to come along and shout, “It’s all good!” Neither will it do for some pessimist to sit around assuming the boat will never pass through.

No. When you want real, serious and meaningful answers, both the optimist and the pessimist are fired. What you want is a realist, if not a professional surveyor. This much is clear, and frankly, we haven’t got the patience for anyone who has a problem with our preference for realism in thought and appraisal.

Optimism and pessimism both are emotionally driven skewings on the reality that lies before us. By taking either path, we are saying in effect, “I cannot know the truth, so I will give up and try to aim hard either this way or that in hopes that my hopelessly flawed sensibilities will have a better chance of hitting on the right answer.

That is to say that both optimism and pessimism are pessimistic about their adherent’s ability to see the world as it is. Now, aren’t political classifications similar to this?

Donald Trump has said that his having selected the Republican Party has more to do with the people in the party than any strict adherence to ideology, and it’s easy to see why.

He’s a man who is about getting the job done. He’s not worried about who will scoff or whose palm gets waxed. He’s just interested in building that tower and making that deal- and his message is gaining ground with millions of hard working, practical realists whose first job is paying the rent and putting food in front of their children when they sit down to dinner.

For the sake of accuracy, he’s also said that he’s a republican because democracy means rule by the mob- but a republic means rule by the law- and that’s a big difference when you’re the one up on charges and an angry mob is burning torches outside.

But we ask- in a world where ideologies are draining public coffers, taking us into more and more untenable foreign conflicts, and powering ever more divisive and destructive politically correct politics- wouldn’t it be nice to have a few Realists in office? Just for a few short and blessed years.
