Reince Priebus: The Mother of All Leakers

Anthony Scaramucci, Trump’s new Communications Director has earned himself a spot at the center of the 24hour news cycle last week when he posted a tweet declaring that he wanted to see the FBI run an investigation against White House Chief of Staff, Reince Priebus.

Many commentators and concerned citizens have been trying since February to discern where the many illegal leaks of sensitive White House information are coming from. In the ongoing analysis, the best guesses have been nameless White House staff, holdovers from the Obama administration, and now Reince Priebus.

Critics of the White House are commenting on what they call the high level of discord in the administration- but fail to account for the possibility that Scaramucci may have a point. His tweet read;

“In light of the leak of my financial disclosure info which is a felony. I will be contacting the @FBI and @TheJusticeDept #swamp @Reince46”

Ryan Lizza of the New York Times responded with a tweet of his own stating;

“In case there’s any ambiguity in his tweet I can confirm that Scaramucci wants the FBI to investigate Reince for leaking.”

Within 30 minutes of this, Josh Kraushaar of the National Journal contributed a tweet of his own saying;

“@RyanLizza reports on CNN that Mooch already contacted the FBI about Reince // not just a threat (as he said in Tweet)”

It was at that point that Scaramucci chimed in again, saying;

“Wrong! Tweet was public notice to leakers that all Sr Adm officials are helping to end illegal leaks. @Reince45”

Not long after this, the original tweet that started all this speculation was deleted- apparently, Scaramucci felt his tweet wasn’t clear enough.

The New York Times reported that Scaramucci was wrong in claiming that releasing his financial statements was a felony, as the documents were filed on June 21st and could have been accessed via a journalist’s request. But when they contacted Scaramucci he told them that the document was not yet in process. If Scaramucci’s statement is accurate, then his claim that Priebus committed a felony by leaking Scaramucci’s financial information may be accurate.

The evening after the tweet, Scaramucci appeared on Fox’s Hannity and Friends and told the host that the leaks were really orders from senior officials that had been passed down to lower level staffers.

Scaramucci said, “One of the problems I’m discovering here in the communications team is senior people are actually the ones responsible for all the leaking. They direct their juniors to do the leaking for them. I’m proud to be reporting to the president directly so I can seal off the communications team from this kind of nonsense. You and I know there are political holdovers from the Obama administration who want to hurt the Trump administration. We have to move quickly.”

The Department of Justice, appropriately added to the conversation when they issued the following statement.

“We have seen an astonishing increase in the number of leaks of classified national security information in recent months. We agree with Anthony that [the] staggering number of leaks are undermining the ability of our government to function and to protect this country. Like the Attorney General has said, ‘whenever a case can be made, we will seek to put some people in jail,’ and we will aggressively pursue leak cases wherever they may lead.”

This trenchant response from the DOJ should put detractors of Scaramucci’s statements at rest. But based on their snide commentary, they don’t seem to be aware of it.

Scaramucci’s hashtag “#swamp” is nothing to be sneezed at considering the fact that the Trump Administration’s freeing up of the Justice Department and law enforcement agencies of all kinds has resulted in a record number of human trafficking busts, pedophile rings, and people in high positions being brought down for possessing child pornography.

The most recent high profile example is the California Deputy State Attorney General, Raymond Joseph Liddy. He was arrested on July 25th in Coronado, CA for possession of child pornography.

Since Trump took office in February, the Administration has made it possible for a record number of human trafficking arrests and criminal rings involved in creating and distributing child pornography.

Make no mistake, this is what Scaramucci meant when he mentioned the word ‘swamp’ preceded by the hashtag symbol. He is referencing the connections within the Democratic Party to these criminal enterprises and reminding the guilty of Trump’s promise to bring the “full force and weight of the law” down on these deeply embedded criminals.
