Sabotage in the White House

To understand what’s going on in the Trump administration, it is necessary to understand two things. One, Trump’s transition team is not there to be the Trump administration, they are there to set the groundwork for the next four years.

This is standard practice in business, and it’s reasonable to assume that Trump expects people to understand that, because for him, it’s the way things get done. A transition team comes to the job, levels the landscape and sets up all the preliminary work. There is no expectation of permanence. Whether or not his transition team knows that is uncertain. The second thing you must understand is that Trump is naïve about just how vicious his opposition is.

He’s catching up quickly, he’s named the media as the opposition party, and he hired his own security people who stand between him and Secret Service. This is a relief because the opposition party has published white papers, (see The Council on Foreign Relations), calling for Trump’s execution. That’s how serious the opposition is.

Consider the case of Muammar Gaddafi. He warned Europe and the people in the region around Libya that if he were to be eliminated there would be a massive refugee crisis that would besiege Europe. Well, after Hillary Clinton announced that they had killed him saying, “We came. We saw. He died,” the refugee crisis began. That’s how serious the opposition to Donald Trump is.

Now, the administration is dealing with a major information leaking problem. During his last press conference, Donald Trump spoke about how classified information in conversations he has had over the phone with leaders in Mexico, China, and Russia has been leaked.

He has made the point numerous times that there are things he won’t talk about concerning national security, that he won’t announce military actions ahead of time- as his predecessors have done- alerting the enemy ahead of time. He has taken the security of the nation as a more serious topic than the way the media portrays him.

On top of this, he’s built his unique form of power on the premise that he will not falter in the face of false accusations- that he will not cower before those who call him names in an attempt to undermine his legitimacy. This has given him tremendous traction against the mainstream media, which he has called ‘the opposition party.’

But he has made a serious and unforced error that falls right in line with the media’s fake news agenda. We had expected for some time that the left had infiltrated the administration with leakers. So when it was reported on CNN the Michael Flynn had lied to Vice President Pence about his discussions with Russian officials, many Trump supporters were ready to believe it.

The details are unclear because Trump wants to protect Flynn. Trump praises Flynn, calling him a good man. Trump says that Flynn did his job in a way that was exemplary, but that the way he communicated information with Pence opened up the administration to controversy. This is the reason Trump asked Flynn to resign.

The President suggested that the reason he dismissed Flynn was to avoid a controversy that would be disruptive to the administration, but he still endorses Flynn. So we see here, the businesslike mode in which Trump sees his transition team. Being fired is not a sign of hostility, or done from spite- it doesn’t even mean that the person who has been fired has done anything wrong. It simply means that the person is no longer appropriate to execute the plan as it must be executed from the present forward.

Trump may have good reasons for firing Flynn, they may be reasons that are foreign to politics as usual- but the media is certain to interpret Flynn’s dismissal as a sign of weakness.

Currently, many Washington insiders who support the President, who have a strong strategic background in DC politics are saying that firing Flynn was a tactical error. They are saying that because the firing directly follows a deceptive hit piece published by several mainstream news outlets- the Left will see it as a success- and they are likely to follow it with more and similar deceptive messages.

Trump is a pragmatist, and as such he does not see things the way the media does. In the near future, you can expect more attacks of this kind. We can only hope that Trump has learned his lesson, and will stop showing the Democrats the chinks in his armor.
