The 2020 Democratic Field So Far

Even though the next presidential election is still nearly 2 years away, numerous Democrats have already thrown their hat into the ring for the chance to challenge President Donald Trump. So far, the 2020 Democratic field is shaping up to be very large and filled with interesting characters. Below, we’ll take a look at the Democrats that have announced their intention to run for President as well as what you need to know about each one.

Sen. Kamala Harris

Kamala Harris is a junior Senator who has represented the state of California since 2017 and is one of the most recent Democrats to officially announce her bid for the Presidency. Despite positioning herself as one of the more prominent figures in the Democratic Party, Kamala Harris may face harsh criticism due to her past as a district attorney and the way she supposedly rose in the ranks (sleeping with the boss).

Being tough on crime is no longer seen as a positive attribute by the modern left, and sleeping your way into power goes against everything feminists stand for. While she is likely considered the favorite for the nomination as of right now, it’s likely that Harris won’t be considered progressive enough to win her party’s nomination.

Julián Castro

Julián Castro served as the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development under President Obama from 2014-2017. Before being nominated to that position, Castro served as the Mayor of San Antonio.

Like Kamala Harris, though, progressives may end up eating their own when it comes to Julián Castro as well. Progressive groups have already begun targeting the former HUD secretary for doing too much to help Wall Street and too little to help minorities during his time in the Obama cabinet.

Rep. Tulsi Gabbard

Since 2013, Tulsi Gabbard has served as the Representative for Hawaii’s 2nd congressional district. She’s a far left Democrat in the mold of Bernie Sanders and even resigned from her position as the Vice Chair of the DNC in order to support Sanders in the 2016 election – a decision that helped thrust her into the national spotlight.

She’s a charismatic politician with a history of military service that helps bolster her image. She is an outspoken pro-life advocate which could win her some favor with Republican voters. However, Gabbard is likely too far to the left to win a general election, and her past stance on LGBTQ issues will earn her a lot of criticism from progressives as well.

John Delaney

From 2013 to 2019, John Delaney served as the Representative for Maryland’s 6th congressional district. Unlike many candidates in the Democratic field so far, Delaney is more of a moderate. Typically, this would be seen as an advantage for a Democratic candidate, but in 2020 this may no longer be the case. John Delaney is a relic of the Democratic Party’s past whose views no longer align with the new direction of the party. For conservatives, Delaney may very well be the most palatable candidate in the Democratic field. However, that certainly isn’t going to help him win the Democratic primary.

Andrew Yang

Andrew Yang is an entrepreneur and the founder of Venture for America. While Yang’s achievements do lean more toward the private sector than the public sector, Yang did serve as the Ambassador of Global Entrepreneurship under President Obama. Yang is running a far left platform that, so far, consists mainly of fighting for a universal basic income for all Americans over the age of 18. Despite trying to steer away from the term “socialist”, Yang’s policies speak for themselves.

Richard Ojeda

The wild card in the 2020 Democratic field, Richard Ojeda is a muscular, tattooed veteran who casts himself as the anti-Trump. He’s running on the idea that he is willing and able to get down in the mud and beat Trump at his own game – something that almost every politician so far has failed to do. He also describes himself as a populist and shares some surprising similarities with Donald Trump when it comes to a number of policies.

However, Ojeda was not able to win his bid for West Virginia’s 3rd Congressional District in 2018, leaving plenty of doubt that he will be able to make a serious run for the Presidency. Critics are already blasting Ojeda for being politically inept and, barring some major changes, it’s doubtful that he will have enough experience or star power to make a serious run for the Democratic nomination.

Other Likely Candidates

All of the candidates listed above have made official announcements to run for President in 2020. However, there are a number of other candidates that are likely to announce their intention to run in the coming months. Both Sen. Elizabeth Warren and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand have created exploratory committees for a 2020 campaign. Other likely candidates include Joe Biden, Corey Booker, John Hickenlooper, and Bernie Sanders.
