The Deep State Targets President Trump

With Donald Trump less than six weeks into his presidency, the usual 100 first days grace period seems to be non-existent. More than a few are already asking if there is a so-called “deep state” working to ensure his presidency fails.

A rush of leaks traced back to government officials has hindered the Trump administration, causing some to draw comparisons to countries like Turkey, Egypt, and Pakistan, in which shadowy networks work within government bureaucracies to undermine and elected governments.

Democrats grandstanded by refusing to attend the confirmation hearings of Trump’s cabinet positions but such was meaningless since every appointee was certain to be confirmed with or without their votes. Considering the rancor of the election process no one is surprised by protests and actions like those taken by the losing party.

However, the sudden and unceremonious ousting of General Michael Flynn, President’s Trump’s choice as national security advisor is more than bothersome.

The who, what, where, and why of General Flynn’s resignation have been analyzed by nearly everyone in the media. However, as to the “how”, all but a few have been mostly silent.

Now, some are charging that the Flynn affair is the result of a conspiracy of rogue career Washington agents to destabilize the presidency. That viewpoint appears to be backed by the president himself, who made it clear he saw various leaks as the result of the both the mainstream media’s “fake-news” and the intelligence community’s willingness to feed both partial and even false information.

As Trump said: “You can talk all you want about Russia, which was all a, you know, fake news, fabricated deal…Russia is fake news. Russia—this is fake news put out by the media.”

Elizabeth N. Saunders, a George Washington University political scientist observes that “Leaking is not new, but this level of leaking is pretty unprecedented.”

General Flynn, like President Trump, is not a career politician more interested in appearance than substance. During his brief tenure, he sought sweeping changes in foreign policy and more or less shut the National Security Council out of policy-making procedures.

Considering, the plethora of leaks over the past few weeks it seems Flynn was well within his rights to take the actions he did. The tensions between the Trump Whitehouse, General Flynn, and the intelligence community has fueled speculation that details of Mr. Flynn’s contact with the Russian ambassador may have been leaked as to undermine Mr. Flynn as must as out of any concern for impropriety.

The deep state also showed itself in the reporting of confidential phone calls from Trump to both his Australian and Mexican counterparts. Speaking to Fox news, the president said that Obama holdovers were feeding news organizations details of his recent tense phone conversations with heads of state. He promised that such people will be replaced as quickly as possible.

“It’s a disgrace that they leaked because it’s very much against our country,” Trump said. “It’s a very dangerous thing for this country,” he said.

Sean Spicer, the White House press spokesman said in a press conference that the president had asked his team to “to look into this because those are very serious implications,”

President Trump’s comments this past Saturday highlighted his concern about what has become widespread early in his administration — the unauthorized distribution of material highlighting numerous false statements and exaggerations by him and senior members of his White House.

The fact the nation’s senior guardian of national security was so quickly moved out of the way gives us a glimpse into how America’s Deep State works. It is not a picture of some rogue intelligence agency run amok outside the law, but rather about the invasive domestic power the NSA, CIA, FBI and others have managed to acquire from within it.

The best explanation as to how Trump’s fledgling apparatus fell victim to the deep state: the ineffectiveness of the White House counsel and a failure to foresee the consequences of decisions made by White House principals.

By contrast, the country’s intelligence agencies were far more clear-sighted in the use of their prerogatives and power. What has made them the best intelligence apparatus in the world make these unelected operatives both the nation’s greatest asset and its worst fear.

One can only hope President Trump’s advisors have learned a valuable lesson the expense of the loss of a good man like Michael Flynn.
