Trump Cuts Aid to El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala to Crackdown on Migrant Caravans, Illegal Border Crossings

President Trump has been talking about the problems revolving around the southern border since long before his election and inauguration. Soon after he first announced that he was running for office, he talked about the issue of illegal immigration and vowed to build a strong and secure border wall.

And now, more than 2 years since his inauguration, things seem to be moving forward with securing the southern border and cutting down on the problems with immigration, as well as trafficking of drugs and humans.

Over the weekend President Trump’s White House Chief of Staff, Mick Mulvaney appeared on CNN to talk about the issues. Mulvaney chastised El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras—which is where the majority of illegal immigrants who cross our Southern Border come from—for not doing more. Mulvaney when talking about President Trump’s decision to cut aid to the three countries said, “And if we’re going to give these countries hundreds of millions of dollars, we would like them to do more.”

When CNN host Jake Tapper pushed back and asked Mulvaney if removing aid would worsen the problem, Mulvaney quipped, “If it’s working so well, why are the people still coming? Why are these historic numbers — again, 100,000 people will cross the border this month alone. That is — that is a crisis. It’s a humanitarian crisis. It’s a security crisis.”

White House officials refused to detail exactly how much in aid money we would stop giving to the three Central American countries, but we know that between last year and this year about $1.3 billion was allocated to the region, with likely the lion’s share going to these 3 countries.

For his part, President Trump said cutting aid to these countries is not the only thing he’s willing to do to stop the flow of illegals into the country. Last week President Trump called into Fox News’ show with Sean Hannity and talked about his efforts working on the border wall.

Trump told Hannity, “Hundreds of miles are already under construction or soon to be under construction. Billions of dollars will be necessary. It’s absolutely vital if you look at what’s happening at the border.”

Cost has been an issue with the construction of the border wall, and it became such a point of controversy that it led to a government shutdown as Democrats, Republicans and Trump could not come to an agreement with each other over how to come up with the funding for the border wall and how to resolve related issues.

Trump during the Hannity interview said that even though people were previously throwing around numbers like $25 and $30 billion to build the border wall, he intends to build it for a much lower amount.

Clearly, a border wall is needed, when one looks at the amount of illegal crossings that are being attempted every day at the border. For example, on just one day this week, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) stopped more than 4,000 illegals at the border claiming asylum. That was higher than the number for any day in more than 10 years.

As if that number was not high enough, that record was broken again the very next day. Last Tuesday, the number increased by another 100.

To quote what CBP said on Wednesday, “Yesterday, that record was broken again – 4,117 in a single day.”

And Trump said this to Hannity, “We’re capturing people that are coming in illegally. We’re not just releasing them. In some cases we’re running out of room.”

He also said that Democrats are “so bad and so corrupt on immigration.”

But Trump is undeterred and is absolutely determined to follow through on his campaign promise to build the wall. He realizes what an urgent situation is at the border. And he has support from high-ranking people. He said:

“If you go to a lot of the generals they will tell you this is a national emergency.”

He was referring to the generals in the military and went on to say, which he has said before, how important it is to defend our country. He said huge numbers of people are coming across the southern border.

Trump also said there would be a news conference at some point that will take place from an area around San Diego where a portion of the border wall has been completed. In that area, construction started in February on a project replacing 14 miles of a barrier along the border.

Perhaps the news conference will be taking place partly to remind people that the border wall construction is really happening. As Trump said to Hannity, “A lot of people don’t think we’re building walls. We’re building massive, many, many miles of walls right now and we’re gearing up to do many more.”

So how much border wall will be built, and when? Trump said during the Hannity interview that hundreds of miles of border wall are being built, so whether that is being reported much in the news, there is definitely progress being made on the wall. And Trump said more of the wall is being built and renovated soon.

All of this comes as good news to the many Americans who have been concerned for quite some time about the security of the southern border and the status of the border wall.
