Marco Rubio Still Hoping Delegates Are the Key to His Nomination

Marco Rubio isn’t giving up just yet, despite some abysmal showings in the primaries and his statements about suspending his campaign. It’s not surprising though, especially considering the delegates are not necessarily gunning to get behind Trump or Cruz. In fact, the delegates still may consider Senator Rubio as their nominee for the country’s top position.

The magic number of delegate votes is 1,237 for the party’s nomination and, as of this writing, Mr. Trump has 743. There are close to 900 votes that are currently still up for grabs. This is the largest factor that’s keeping his hope alive after his campaign suspension. He has remained consistent that the suspension does not mean that he’s conceded defeat.

Marco Rubio has tried to remain respectful and reasonable in debates tinged with fire. It’s this level-headed attitude that has earned him respect amongst the delegates. While others have already declared who the nominee will be without question, those in the know can tell you that it’s not over ’til it’s over.

Case in point, you may have already heard that he’s made an unusual move to stay in the game. Mr. Rubio has asked the delegates who already pledged their support to him in Oklahoma, Alaska and the DC area to stick with him even though his campaign is currently on hold. The main reason is so that he can hold Trump off a little longer, as Trump would be unable to pick up those delegates to hit the golden number. Those delegates actually can still pick Rubio for the next round of voting, but it won’t stay that way if the race keeps heading in this direction.

It may be a futile move to stop Trump, given that it’s likely those delegates would go to Cruz anyway. Regardless, the letter will undoubtedly serve to remind the delegates that every vote is pivotal right now, and their decision will have a significant impact on our country. The other dilemma lies in the fact that Rubio can’t tell his original backers who to vote for once he’s out for good. The best he can do is ask as nicely as possible for them to support the person he supports.

There’s slight talk right now that the rules of the Republican party might be changed to favor the idea of candidates having more power over their original delegates. In this case, Rubio could tell his delegates who to vote for. This would put significant control in their hands to choose the nominee.

However, the changes seem extremely unlikely when Cruz and Trump currently have the support of more than 1250 delegates between the two of them. The measure would almost undoubtedly need the support of these two candidates before it goes through, and they won’t want to leave anything up to chance. However, it’s important to note that rules tend to change when people feel them absolutely necessary. That’s why we may very well see a candidate who’s had no stake in this race (e.g., Paul Ryan) wind up getting the nomination.

Of course, even if Marco Rubio feels that he won’t get the bid, he will certainly settle for the consolation prize of gaining a more prestigious title within his party’s hierarchy. His and his staff’s days are likely filled with talking and persuading the right people and forging the connections that will ultimately lead to a better party. Rubio obviously has his own ambitions, but he cares about where the Republican party is going too. He has been vocal about his feelings on Trump’s policies, and he’s prepared to fight in whatever capacity he’s able to do so while still standing with his party’s ideals.

As any presidential hopeful can tell you, failures are a part of the process. However, it’s the delegates really that are the key right now to who will come out on top. Cleveland is going to make headlines this year when the final nominee is decided upon, where normally the announcement is just a formality. A Republican who can stand up for what he believes in and stay strong in the face of opposition counts for a lot with people, even if they don’t quite reach their goal the first time around. As long as he can keep his nose clean for the next few years, people are confident that Marco Rubio will rise within the ranks of the Republican party. Dare we say Rubio 2020.
