McCabe’s Firing May Hurt Comey and Mueller more than Trump

The night after former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe was fired, George Washington University School of Law Professor Jonathan Turley pointed out two points of interest that many in the mainstream media and the Washington establishment either missed or purposefully ignored. He said:

This could easily spin further out of control.

Whether far left progressives or establishment Republicans admit it or not, the Russia / Trump affair has already spun out of control and is getting worse by the day. Some believe it will bring President Trump down as they have been trying to do since day one. But the likelihood, at least in the long term, is that they have created a monster that will turn on them.

From Comey, to McCabe, to Robert Mueller, with a number of actors in between, there is no clean ending to this current affair.

Tuley continued:

There was one line in McCabe’s statement last night that I immediately flagged. Because he said that he had authority to do this and he conferred with the director. The director at that time was James Comey. Now, the problem here is that [he] said under oath that he never leaked information … So, if the inspector general believes this was a leak to the media, it raises serious questions about Comey’s previous testimony and could get him into serious trouble.

Did anyone else catch that? It sure seems like McCabe exposed his former boss, James Comey, as a liar. Did McCabe turn on him or was that a slip up?

Not long after that, President Trump launched one of his, now signature, tweet storms decrying first McCabe and then Mueller without forgetting to add another zinger for James Comey.

President Trump ridiculed the pointless investigation by special counsel Robert Mueller calling it a “witch hunt” built on a foundation of lies and fraud. He tweeted:

The Mueller probe should never have been started in that there was no collusion and there was no crime … It was based on fraudulent activities and a Fake Dossier paid for by Crooked Hillary and the DNC, and improperly used in FISA COURT for surveillance of my campaign. WITCH HUNT!

Trump’s attack on Mueller followed his personal lawyer, John Dowd, calling for an end to the probe into Russian election meddling. He told CNN:

I pray that Acting Attorney General Rosenstein will follow the … example of the FBI Office of Professional Responsibility and Attorney General Sessions and bring an end to alleged Russia collusion investigation manufactured by McCabe’s boss James Comey …

So why do Turley, Trump, and Dowd make a point of connecting the dots from Comey to McCabe to Mueller? Because they ARE connected. One leads to another in a vicious cycle that threatens our republic.

The President’s frustration with the whole process is understandable.

If there is any collusion, it isn’t between Trump and Russia but rather between a number of players of what can only be called “The Deep State.” They can only step up their attacks as Trump’s agenda continues to progress in spite of opposition from all sides.

CNN analyst Philip Mudd, a former Mueller FBI appointee threatened President Trump recently during an off-the-wall rant on live TV. He bellowed:

The FBI people are ticked! If you think you can push us off this because you can intimidate the director, you’d better think again! … 1908. I know how this game is going to be played! We’re going to win.

To set the record straight, McCabe was not fired by President Trump but by Attorney General Jeff Sessions at the recommendation of Inspector General Horowitz, an Obama appointee and the FBI’s Office of Professional Responsibility.

Andrew McCabe, another Obama holdover, was fired as deputy FBI director for lying to the FBI. Trump fired Comey because of his ineptness and serial lying to Congress.

Paul Rosenzweig of The Atlantic believes the whole thing is a tempest in a teapot, saying that anyone who believes that special counsel Mueller will ever prosecute the president are “engaging in fantasy.”

Many on that side are abandoning the collusion angle and holding out for Mueller charging Trump with obstruction of justice but Rosenzweig even doubts that saying:

Mueller will not indict Trump for obstruction of justice. Period. Speculations to the contrary are just fantasy. He won’t do it [because] … the Department of Justice has a long-standing legal opinion that sitting presidents may not be indicted.

So why the press for something that will never happen. The Deep State is holding out for a Democratic Congress in 2020 to impeach the man they never believed would become President.
